The Judicial Institute has been established in Iraq according to Law No. (33) of 1976, and it aims to prepare judges and members of the public prosecution, in addition to organizing special courses to develop the legal level of legal employees in state institutions.
The duration of the study for the courses of preparation of judges and public prosecuters is two years, during which the student receives practical and theoretical training.
since its foundation in 1976 until 2017, the Judicial Institute was part of the Ministry of Justice. after the issuance of the Supreme Judicial Council Law No. (45) of 2017, under which the head of the Court of Cassation, Judge Dr. Faiq Zidan, assumed the position of President of the Supreme Judicial Council, the Judicial Institute was joined to the Supreme Judicial Council with the promulgation of Law No. (70) 2017. Under which the Judicial Institute was separated from the Ministry of Justice and joined the Supreme Judicial Council. Judge Faiq Zidan directed a broad reconstruction campaign to rehabilitate the Judicial Institute by restoring all its facilities and developing the teaching method to be more practical.
The Judicial Institute is supervised by a council that includes the President of the Supreme Judicial Council as president, the Chief of public Prosecution -a Member, the president of the Judicial Supervision Authority -a Member, the President of the Baghdad Court of Appeal /Al-Risafa -a Member, the President of the Baghdad Court of Appeal /Al-Karkh -a Member, and the Director General of the Judicial Institute -a Member.
The Judicial Institute is managed by a General Director, while the teaching staff in the Judicial Institute are comprised of judges, members of the public prosecution, academics universities specializing in law, as well as experts specializing in topics related to the work of judiciary.
